James was the son of Richard and Sarah Journegin Fancher. He grew up in Overton Co., TN, where his family moved before he was ten. He married Elizabeth Carlock on January 16, 1816 in Rock Springs, Overton Co., TN, where they started their family of eleven. They moved them to Carroll Co., AR in the late 1830s, where their last three children were born.
James was a Colonel in the Tennessee Militia in War of 1812.

He died on 8th June 1866, 76 years, 4 months, 26 days. Born on 26 Jan 1790 in Stokes County.
His father, Richard Fancher was a Revolutionary War Soldier. When James was 13 years old the family moved to Overton County, TN. In 1838 the family moved to Carroll County, Arkansas.
