Obituary - GERALD HEMSWORTH Peacefully in the evening hours of Monday, June 6, 2005, Gerald "Jerry" Hemsworth beloved husband of Marjorie passed away at the Tuxedo Villa at the age of 93. His parents, Tom and Lillian; his brothers, Bertrand, George and sister Eileen predeceased him. Jerry and his partner John Rae founded one of the most popular restaurants in Canada - Rae Jerry's. Jerry grew up in the depression years and so was obliged to seek employment at a very early age. He worked on the CN dining cars and later moved to the first Sal's on Fort Street where he worked with the owner Stuart Irwin and where he first learned how to run a restaurant. There he met John and they formed a lasting friendship. After a short time learning the food business they moved to Fort William with two other partners Gordon Hill and Casey Byron and opened a restaurant of their own. It was reasonably successful but both boys always had a yearning to return to Winnipeg. One day they learned Brathwaite's Drug Store at Portage and Vaughan wanted to open a small restaurant and that was enough to move them back to their favourite city and to owning (with the financial help of Art Chipman) their first Winnipeg business which they aptly named Rae and Jerry's in September l939. Not long after returning to Winnipeg Jerry met the love of his life Marjorie Johnston and they were married on April 29, 1942. Not only did Marge become his wife and best friend she also worked along side Jerry and John in their restaurant. Later they moved to Kennedy Street in a far more elaborate setting. Some years after their success on Kennedy Street Jerry and John decided to move to Portage Avenue and Langside and that too turned out to be another success story. And finally they packed that location in -- mainly because of the lack of parking in the area -- and moved to Polo Park and that became a Winnipeg landmark. Jerry was a very private person but he did pass along some good advice on how to run a restaurant to many a young entrepreneur. While John did most of the P/R for the store Jerry made sure all the bills were paid and the i's were dotted. When they decided to retire they wanted to sell their business to someone who would continue the tradition of fine food and excellent service. They discovered that person in Steve Hrousalas who Jerry believed has always lived up to their motto. Jerry and John took great pride in providing their customers and friends with the finest in cuisine but they knew they couldn't do it without the support of a loyal and dedicated staff which followed them from store to store and became part of the R J's family. Over the years they served many visiting celebrities and it wasn't uncommon for someone who visited Winnipeg for the first time to say see you at Rae and Jerry's the place where everyone meets. Jerry will be missed by his ever loving wife Marge; his and her nephews and nieces and his many friends. Marge would like to express special thanks to the staff at Tuxedo Villa for their care and understanding of her dear husband Jerry. In keeping with Jerry's wishes cremation has taken place and a small family gathering will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers and if friends so desire they may make a donation in Jerry's name to the charity of their choice. Thomson Funeral Home 669 Broadway 783- 7211
