Lewis was born in Russell County, Virginia, on a farm that his father and mother had settled on, after they got married in 1795. The farm had belonged to his father's great uncle (Johann Wilhelm Bach, known as John William Back), who had died in 1794.

Lewis' parents left Russell County in 1810, and they moved to Kentucky--his father was actually just "coming back home" to Kentucky.

Lewis met and married his wife, in southeastern Kentucky, around 1826. During the first few years of their marriage, Lewis and Peggy moved back and forth, between Harlan County, KY and Russell County, VA. But by 1853, Lewis had bought 1,687 acres in Morgan County, KY--it later became part of Magoffin County. He built a nice home there, which he called, "White Pine." He lived there for the rest of his life.

But in 1855, he actually stole his mother's inheritance. He "sold" her 181 acres of land, in White County, Tennessee, which she had inherited from her brother, Thomas Robertson, for $1,000. Members of his family shunned him, after he did that.
