Oscar de Montel; born in Castroville, Texas; passed away in the Veterans Hospital at Fort Whipple, Arizona. He was predeceased by his parents Charles & Justine de Montel; brother Charles de Montel Jr.; sisters: Octavia Hopp and Pauline Taylor.

Oscar was survived by brothers: Edmond de Montel of Hondo and Robert de Montel of the old homestead in Castroville; sister Mollie de Montel Haass of Hondo; 12 nephews; and 14 nieces.

On 3 May 1898, Santa Fe, New Mexico; Oscar enlisted with Company H, 1st US Volunteer Cavalry; the Rough Riders. He served with Teddy Roosevelt in the San Juan Hill and Santiago Battles in Cuba during the Spanish American War. On 15 Sep 1898, he and the Rough Riders mustered out of service at Montauk Point, New York.

On 9 Sep 1899, Roswell, New Mexico; reenlisted with Company B, 11th US Volunteer Cavalry to serve in the Philippine Insurrection. In the Philippines, he served among the Igarrote head hunters on Luzon. On 29 Jan 1901, he mustered out of service in Manila, Philippine Islands.

While living in the Chisos Mountains in the Big Bend area, he served as a guide for General Pershing's expedition into Mexico. Oscar later was in government service in Colón, Panama Canal Zone and in an expedition into South America.

Oscar's body was transported to Hondo and following graveside services, buried in the family cemetery above Castroville. Pallbearers were nephews: Charles de Montel, Oscar B. Taylor, Monroe Taylor, E.H. de Montel, Frank de Montel, and Richard de Montel. Honorary pallbearers: Dr. R.P. Thomas, Herman Geyer, and Henry F.
