Chesley Jerome was born in Prairie Valley, Texas, to the late Otis Lee and Mary Ethel (Overton) Auten. He grew up in Prairie Valley and graduated from Whitney High School and Tarleton State University. On July 20, 1938, he married Wanda Overton. During World War II, he served his country in the U.S. Air Force as a pilot, enlisting in August l943, and was honorably discharged in December of 1945. He also served in reconnaissance during the Korean War. Chesley was known to say, "I never had a job I didn't like." He worked as a school teacher, coach, highway patrolman, secret service agent, and was Director of Law Enforcement over all the State Parks, retiring from the Texas Department of Public Safety. He owned and managed Auten Farms and was of the Baptist faith. He loved having his children close by.
Preceding him in death were his brothers, Doyle Auten and Marshall Auten; and sisters, Ruby Boswell and Opal Jones.
Survivors include his wife of 74 years, Wanda; daughter, Joyce Hill and her husband, Jimmy; sons, retired Maj. Darvin Auten and his wife, Barbara, and Dr. Cliff Auten and his wife,
Annette, all of Whitney; grandchildren, Lucretia Price, Suzanne Sessums, Clint Auten, Kevin Auten, Kristopher Auten, Kara Sneed, Tracy Brightwell, and Eric Auten; 24 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
