Chester Brainard was a life-long Enfield resident. Mr. Brainard started the North End Nurseries in 1905 on Enfield Street where Enfield Shopping Plaza now stands. Mr. Brainard was a former tree warden for Enfield, former member and president of the Connecticut Nurserymen's Association, former member of the New England Seedmen's Association, a former member of the Old Thompsonville Board of Trade anad later the Enfield Chamber of Commerce and a former trustee of the Enfield Cemetery Association. He was one of the founders of the association which sponsored the western Massachusetts flower shows. He also was the oldest member of the Enfield Society for the Detection of Thieves and Robbers, a social group, and a charter member of the Enfield Historical Society. Mr. Brainard was a former member of the First Presbyterian Church and its treasurer for many years. Later he was a member of the Hazardville United Methodist Church.
