Gants' marriage was hardly a secret

BLANCHARDVILLE — Although they tried to keep their marriage a secret, "the cat was out of the bag Within two weeks," says their son, Karl.

Bernard Gant and the former Lulu Thompson drove to Freeport, Ill., Jan. 11, 1930, to get their marriage license. They expected to wait before they could marry; but when they discovered they could apply for a license and tie the knot on the same" day, they did — without a wedding dress or ring. The bride borrowed her sister's ring, and the couple exchanged vows on the spot. (Her sister had accompanied the couple).

Still, the newlyweds had to keep their union a secret. Mrs; Gant was a teacher, and in 1930 society frowned on married teachers. They asked the county clerk to keep their secret, but the couple neglected to warn the minister who married them. He put the happy news in the local newspaper, and when the groom's aunt living in Freeport read it, she spread the news.

The Gants will observe their 60th Wedding anniversary Jan. 11. Their children are Barbara Halverson, Stoughton; and Jerry and Karl, both of Blanchardville. They have seven grandchildren and nine greatgrandchildren.
