Joseph's father was Augustus DeMarsh. Augustus was born in the town of Frahier-et-Chatbier, located in the Haute Soane department in the Franche-Comte region of eastern France. He immigrated to USA about 1845 and married Joseph's mother, Maria Bradt DeMarsh, who was born in Cape Vincent, New York.
Joseph married Ruby Ursula Fowler and they had three children before Ruby died. He then married Sarah Rebecca Little. After two infant deaths they had two living children. The entire family of five was living in OK near Tulsa when Joseph disappeared. He would work in Tulsa during the week and go home on weekends. He left for work one week and was never seen or heard from again, leaving his young wife with five children to support and no means of income.
