A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Blain, Perry County, September 11, 1861, and mustered into federal service at Camp Cameron, Washington DC, October 11 as a private with Co. C, 9th Pennsylvania Cavalry (92nd Pa). He re-enlisted as a Veteran Volunteer January 1, 1864, at Cleveland, Tennessee, promoted to bugler January 17, 1865, and honorably discharged with his company July 18, 1865.
