Per his gravestone, he was killed in the Gould and Curry Mine. His burial record shows "inhalation of gas" in the mine as cause of death. His was one of the six bodies that were not immediately recovered. An additional three death records were filed in November 1887 with the 24 June 1887 date. The cause of death on those was "suffocation"; the three men were John Trounce, Robert Bruce, and Chester W. Carpenter. Two more man who died on the 400 level, Joncy Morgan and Andrew Bean, had their certificates filed in September 1887.
