Adolph Alexander Reisig, 85, passed away Saturday, September 27, after a heroic battle with cancer in Wichita.

Adolph was born in Russell, Kansas, to Alex and Mollie (Vogel) Reisig on Feb. 20, 1923. He graduated from Russell High School in 1941 then enlisted in the Marines at the age of 18, two days after the bombing of Pearl Harbor. Adolph was a member of the First Marine Division and was deployed to the South Pacific before landing on Guadalcanal on August 7, 1942. During his six months of defending Henderson Field under the leadership of then-Lt. Ray Davis (later General Davis) he was wounded numerous times and lost his hearing in that epic battle. He was eventually hospitalized in Melbourne, Australia, and Ballarat, Australia, before he finally made it home to San Francisco where he spent another 11 months recovering from his injuries in Oakland Naval Hospital.

Returning to Russell, he married Gene Graff on Nov 3, 1947, in Las Vegas, Nevada.

He owned and operated an automotive body shop and a crane excavating business before moving to Hays where he attended FHSU and graduated with a degree in Business Administration in 1961. Along his journey, Adolph operated the Texaco Oil Company in Hays, built and sold homes and securities. He served as Executive Director of the FHSU Endowment Association for many years.

He co-founded the Hays Historical Society and was one of the founders of the Butterfield Trail Antique Autos. Through his long and bountiful life, Adolph was active in the Methodist Church, Lions Club, VFW, Toastmasters, American Legion, First Marine Division and the Marine Corps League.

His favorite activities were anything that had to do with horses. For years, he was a member of a very special group of men called the Rooftop Riders who annually crossed the Continental Divide on horseback. He loved God, his family, his country, the Marines, their ranch, Breckenridge, antique cars, Arabian horses, all nature, and especially his dogs.

Mr. Reisig was preceded in death by his parents, Mollie and Alexander Reisig, his three sisters, Ada Ryan, Isabella Blaustein, and Helene Pfeifer. He is survived by his brother, Max, of Boulder, Colo., and his beloved wife of 60 years, Gene. He is also survived by his daughters Jody Lambert and Alexis Hopkins, both of Wichita and his faithful dog, Jack.

Memorials to the Hays Humane Society are suggested. Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home, 20th and Pine, Hays in charge. Funeral services will be Thursday, October 2nd, 2:00 pm at the First United Methodist Church in Hays, KS with burial to follow at the Russell City Cemetery with military services by the Russell VFW and American Legion.
