He spent his early life in Michigan City moving to Chelsea in 1965. He was a 1970 graduate of Southwestern High School and received an associate degree in electronics from Ivy Tech. Dave was united in marriage in 1972 to Luann J. Hall, this union was blessed with two daughters. He resided the rest of his life in Jefferson County and was currently employed as a machinist for the past 39 years with Rotary Lift in Madison. He had worked for a year with Faucet & Haines in Louisville, Kentucky. He had attended the Kent Christian Church earlier in life. He had been a member of the Madison Moose Lodge No. 765, the Archery Club and the Gun Club. He enjoyed cars, especially Corvettes, Bluegrass Music, woodworking, guns, was a practical joker, and enjoyed spoiling his grandchildren. Dave died Saturday, February 18, 2012 at 8:07 p.m. at the Norton Hospital in Louisville, Kentucky.
Dave will be missed by his daughters: Susan Bates Pope of Central, Indiana, Sheila Bates Elswick of Corydon, Indiana; his companion: Kay Scott of Madison, Indiana; his grandchildren: Shelby Elswick, Chelsey Elswick, Kazz Pope, Preston Bates, Kendall Bates, & Dylan Pope; his brother: Robert Danny Bates of Hanover, Indiana; his uncle: Raymond Jenkins of Fort Wayne, Indiana; his step son: Mark McKay & his wife, Nicole of North Vernon, Indiana; his step grandchildren: Morgan, Kirsten & Tyler.
He was preceded in death by his father, William Daniel Bates died, June 30, 1972; his mother, Ellender Lucille Jenkins Bates Jennings Chambers died, Nov. 13, 2004; his step fathers, William Murray Jennings died, August 24, 1986 and Floyd E. Chambers, Sr. died, December 10, 2001.
Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, February 22, 2012 at 1:00 p.m., by the Rev. Michael Cammack at Morgan & Nay Funeral Centre, 325 Demaree Drive in Madison, Indiana. Interment will follow in the New Bethel Cemetery near Chelsea, Indiana. Friends may call Tuesday from 5:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. and Wednesday from 11:00 a.m. until time of the service at the Morgan & Nay Funeral Centre, 325 Demaree Drive in Madison, Indiana.
