Gladys Claytor Crandall died on February 12, 2012 in Auburn, Calif., due to complications after hip surgery. She was born in Oklahoma to John and Violet Claytor, the 4th of eight children. The family moved west in the 20s, first to Colorado, then Utah, and finally to California in 1931. Gladys lived in Penryn and attended Placer High School, where she met and fell in love with C.E. Butch Crandall. They were married in 1938 and lived in Auburn, where they enjoyed their family and many dear friends. Their two children, Carole and James, were both born in Auburn in 1942 and 1945. In 1971 Butch and Gladys retired to live near Lake Chapala in Mexico. After Butch's death in 1996, Gladys returned to Auburn to be near family and friends.
Gladys was preceded in death by her siblings Pat, Roy, Jack, Hazel, John, Ray and Glen. She is survived by her children Carole (Mick) Darlington, James (LaNelle) Crandall; her grandsons Jim (Deb) Crandall, Mike (Brandy) Crandall, Jeff (Christa) Darlington and John (Cyndi) Darlington; her nine great-grandchildren Hannah, Dalton, Trenton, Charlie, Oscar, Austin, Connell, Paul, Spencer, Ella and Trevor.
A celebration of Gladys' life will be held at First Congregational Church of Auburn, 710 Auburn Ravine Rd, on Saturday, February 25, 2012 at 2:30, followed by a reception at the home of Mick and Carole Darlington
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to a charity of your choice . Arrangements under the direction of Chapel of the Hills.
