Jay A. Samples, 81, of Buckhannon, died Tuesday, Jan. 28, 1997, at Ruby Memorial Hospital, Morgantown.
Born Sept. 22, 1915, at Heaston Ridge, he was the son of the late James Garfield and Effie Buchanan Samples. His wife, Carrie Ellen Tenney Samples, whom he married Nov. 11, 1946, survives. Mr. Samples was a retired lumberman.
He served with the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II and was a member of Chapter 36 Disabled American Veterans. He was founder of the Buckhannon-Upshur Group Homes and served as the organization's first president. Mr. Samples attended North Buckhannon United Methodist Church.
He is survived by two daughters and one son-in-law, WV; four sons and daughters-in-law, of WV; three sisters, Vessie Adele Harman of Mansfield, Ohio, Maxine Miller of Ashland, Ohio, and Lydia Jane Coe of Buckhannon; one brother, Eli Samples of Mansfield, Ohio; two sisters-in-law, Helen Samples of Aliquippa, Pa. and Jean Samples of Mansfield; 15 grandchildren and nine great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews and special friends.
Four brothers, Amos Marion Samples, Bryan Taft Samples, Billy Haul Samples and three sisters Eula Channel, Geneva Dupont and an infant sister preceded him in death.
Friends were recieved from 4-9p.m. Friday at Poling-St. Clair Funeral Home, where services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday with the Revs. Junior Harris and Donald McCauley officiating.
Burial will be in Heaston Ridge Church Cemetery where Chapter 36 Disabled American Veterans will conduct graveside services.
