Jacob's parents, George and Mary (Knight) Bare moved from Page County, Virginia to Westmoreland county in 1816. Some census reports say he was born in Virginia, but other sources indicate he was born in Westmoreland county, Pennsylvania.
Church records indicate he was baptized at the Zion Lutheran Church on August 22, 1822.
Jacob and Elizabeth Mellender were married by Rev. Joseph A. Dobson of the Center Bethel Church of God in Stonerville, where Elizabeth was a member. Jacob's mother later heard one of Rev. Dobson's sermons and joined the Center Bethel Church Church of God in 1843.
