Born c1826 "Hampshire VA" [Now West VA] Son of Vincent and Martha Vandiver. Enrolled at Milan September 21, 1861 in Co. C Grundy County Battalion Six Months Militia. Age given as 35. Age on tombstone is 35 yrs & 11 Months.
Died from sickness in Chillicothe MO Civil War military hospital December 11, 1861. Military record is dated incorrectly, due to confusion at beginning of next year. Militia service was for six months, not for much over 13 months.
Death was December 11, 1861 as the tombstone is inscribed.
The body was returned for burial on the home farm east of Boynton Missouri. South east of the house on the old Hamilton Farm. Marked with a small engraved tomb stone. Reset 2001 on original base near the top of a hill in a pasture near the original homestead. Charolais cattle there can be dangerous. One-time owner was fatally injured.
