Dragging Begun in River Search

INDEPENDENCE – Dragging operations started about 10 a.m. today in the Verdigris River east of Independence in connection with the disappearance of Jimmie G. Banzet, 34, of Bartlett.

Banzet, a member of a country music band and owner of a Bartlett construction firm, was reported missing by his wife, Shirley, Saturday, June 7, 1975. The couple has a nine-year-old daughter, Shelia.

A 1971 Cadillac, registered to Banzet was recovered Monday in about 18 feet of water near the Verdigris bridge about a mile east of here on US160 highway. Banzet was last seen Friday night, June 6, 1975, after playing with a band at a club in Independence.

The Montgomery County sheriff's department said dragging operations scheduled Tuesday were postponed because of a high river level and heavy rains in the area.

The river had dropped to about the eight-foot level when operations started today. Flood gates at the Fall River and Elk City reservoirs were closed to lower the water depth.

Four boats were engaged in the operations with the help of numerous volunteers and spotters downstream on the Verdigris.
