He was born August 12, 1913 in Dickenson County, Virginia, and was the son of the late Dr. T. C. and Emma Yates Sutherland.
He was a member of the United States Armed Forces serving at the rank of Captain with the United States Army during World War II. During this period of time, he was captured on December 21, 1944 during the Battle of the Bulge in an offensive known as the Belgium Blitz. At the time of his capture, he was serving as Battalion Surgeon for the 106th Infantry. He spent the remainder of the war interned in a Prisoner of War Camp until his release in April 1945.
For his service to his country, he received the Bronze Star, the Victory Medal and the European Occupational Theatre Medal.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, William Sutherland, T. C. Sutherland, Jr. and Buster Sutherland.
Full Military Rites will be conducted at the cemetery by members of the John Ratliff Post #164 of the American Legion.
