John Simmons Strain was the son of James Strain and Lucinda Simmons Strain. He was born in ABOUT 1836 in Crawfordsville, Indiana. He married Anna Elizabeth Duke on 8 Jan 1857 in Crawfordsville, Indiana.

They had 7 known Strain children: William E., Mary Ellen, George Henry, James Franklin, David A., Herman Theodore and Joseph Rilley.

On 2 Jan 1857, the State of Indiana, Montgomery County issued a marriage license for John S Strain and Ann E Duke, in Crawfordsville. They were married on 8 Jan 1857 and it was filed on 20 Mar 1858 (see photo).

On the 1860 Salem, Dent Co., Missouri census, I found carpenter John Strain, 24, born in Indiana, had $120 in real estate and $250 in personal property; Anne Strain, 24, Virginia; Wm E Strain, 3, Indiana; Mary Ellen Strain, 1 , Indiana and farmhand (John's brother) E. F. Strain, 22, born in Indiana, with $120 in real estate and $35 in personal property. They reside next to cabinet maker David Simmons, 31 and his family.

Organized at Lafayette, Ind., as a Battalion of 4 Companies, "A," "B," "C," "D," February 21, 1862. Duty as prison guard at Lafayette and at Camp Morton, Indianapolis, Ind., till May. Left State for Washington, D.C., May 27. Attached to Piatt's Brigade, Sturgis' Command, Defences of Washington, to August, 1862. Piatt's Brigade, Army of the Potomac, to October, 1862. He was last on the 1880 De Roan, Hempstead County, Arkansas census, a carpenter, age 45, born Indiana, with his wife Anna E., 45, Virginia; sons: George, 18, Indiana; James, 15, Indiana; David, 7, Arkansas; Herman, 5, Arkansas and Joseph, 2, Arkansas. His father James, and sister Anna were 2 pages over on the census, in the same town. His wife Lucinda, was not listed.

All of his siblings served in the Civil War for the Union. John S. Strain served as a Union private in Company I, in the 63rd Indiana Infantry. Govt. film #M540, roll 75. His brothers Elias and David also served in the same unit.

John's children applied for their father's pension on 2 July 1898 in #61, application #679024 in Oklahoma. It says their dad died 17 Dec 1881 in Hempstead County Arkansas. Children mentioned are David A., Herman T., Joseph R., William E. and Mary Ellen.

Then on 10 Sep 1898, John's children, Joseph Strain, James Strain and David T. Strain, all apply as tenants in common for 86 and 74/100 acres in the East half of the NE quarter of section 6 in township 14 N of range six West in Crawfordsville, IN. #793285, certificate #31512 from the U.S. General Land Office Records, 1796-1907 in Parke Co., Indiana. (On 16 Sep 1834, "James Strain of Augusta Co., VA" purchased 160 acres in Crawfordsville, Montgomery Co., IN, Section 23, Twp. 18-N, Range 3-W, Meridian 2nd PM.)
