He was born to parents Elias Baur and Anna Katharina Ulmer in Lorch, Emmendingen, Baden-Wuerttemberg, Germany. After coming to the United States in 1881, he became a baker, started Baur Brothers Bakery in Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania in 1885. He married Phillipina Stocke February 24, 1884 in Pittsburgh. They had 8 children, 7 lived to adulthood. He moved to Philadelphia between 1913 and 1920. He was buried December 4, 1942.
