FROSTBURG — John W. "Jack" Griffiths, 93, of Frostburg, passed away on Monday, Feb. 6, 2012 at his residence.
Born March 10, 1918 in Pittsburgh, Pa., he is the son of the late John and Mamie (Fischer) Griffiths. He is also preceded in death by two sisters, Eileen Johnson and Gene Meddings.
Jack served his country in the US Army during World War II. He worked for G.C. Murphy Company starting in 1937 and retired in 1980 where he had been the manager since 1962. Jack was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Frostburg, a member of the Masons and the Frostburg Rotary Club where he was a recipient of the Paul Harris Fellow award. He was also a volunteer at the Frostburg Museum, a member of the Council of the Alleghenies and the American Legion Post 24.
For those who knew him, Jack was patient, gentle, kind person, and loved talking to everyone. He had many friends and was a dedicated caring family man. He took much pride in his home, journaling through his time in the army, his youth and his time in Frostburg, family genealogy and local history. Most of all, Jack enjoyed the beauty of the world around him each day. He will be deeply missed by his family and friends.
Jack is survived by his wife of 65 years, Gladys G. "Day" (Miller); two daughters, Bonnie Carter and husband George, Orange Beach, Ala., Tammy McClellan and husband Robert, LaVale; one sister, Marilyn Urso and husband Vito, Allison Park, Pa.; seven grandchildren, Jason Carter and wife Miriam, New York City, N.Y., Megan Carter and fiancée Frank Moreno, Chicago, Ill., Heather Bray and husband Joe, Cumberland, Melissa Saville and husband Garrett, Cumberland, Bryan Reeves and wife Michele, LaVale, Keith McClellan and Jennifer McClellan, LaVale; five great-grandchildren, Morgan Dickson, Hannah and Emily Bray, Cameron Saville and Josie Reeves.
Funeral services will be held at Durst Funeral Home P.A., 57 Frost Ave., Frostburg, on Friday, Feb. 10, 2012 at 2 p.m. with Pastor Richard Schoenly and Pastor Donald Sause officiating. Family and friends will be received one hour prior to the service from 1 to 2 p.m.
Interment will be in the Frostburg Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Jack's memory to St, Paul's Lutheran Church, 34 West Main St., Frostburg, MD 21532
