Alice Gardiner was the daughter of Henry Hart, Jr. and Sarah (Robinson) Hart. The eldest of their eight children, she grew up near the village of Sandwich in Kendall County, IL.

She was married to Henry Christian Gardiner on Nov. 28, 1875 at the home of her parents in a ceremony performed by Elder E. Banta.

They were living in Lamoni, IL when their son, Henry Elias, was born on June 16, 1881. When their daughter, Sarah Alice, was born on Sept. 20, 1887, they were living in Broughton, KS, where her husband was a railroad section foreman.

Mrs. Gardiner was preceded in death by one sister, Elice, and three brothers, Owen, Merritt and Thomas. Survivors include three sisters: Clara and her husband James Chapman; Unice and her husband William Winslow; Estella and her husband Lucian Winslow.
