George Joseph Byerly was the eldest of four known children of Peter Byerly (1775-1852) and Eva Frank *1767-1830), who married c1797 at presumably Rowan (now Davidson) County, North Carolina. After Eva (went by Eve?) died, Peter remarried to Mary P. ("Polly") Loman (1803-1878) and had five additional known children.

George first married to Sarah Hege (1809-1843) in c1830 and they were the parents of five known children, namely:

1. Charity Byerly Hege (1831-1911)
2. Elansom Byerly (1833–1897)
3. Catherine ("Katy" Byerly Davis (1836-1896)
4. Sarah Frances Byerly Walser (1836–1929)
5. Henry Byerly (1841-1850)

After Sarah died, George remarried to Margaret ("Peggy") Perryman (1816-1910) in c1844 and they were the parents of an additional five known children, namely:

6. Jesse M. Byerly (1845-1847)
7. Columbus Perryman Byerly (1847–1884)
8. Agnes A Byerly Hege (1850–1920)
9. Emma Regina Byerly Sink (1853–1923)
10. Lillian Day Byerly (1857–1918)
