PLENTYWOOD — Funeral services for Violet Larsen will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 12. Pastor Barbara Westhoff will officiate at the service at St. John's Lutheran Church, east of Plentywood; interment will be in St. John's Cemetery. Violet died unexpectedly at Sheridan Memorial Hospital in Plentywood on Monday, Feb. 7, 2011; she was 93.

Violet Simonson Larsen, the third child of William Simonson and Henrietta Solberg was born on Feb. 22, 1917, at the family farm northeast of Antelope. The other children born to them were Solveig, Mary, Beatrice and Arthur. During her mother's sickness and after her death, her mother's sister, Geharda, took care of the family; and has always seemed like their real mother. Violet's dad married Geharda and, together, they had five children, Barney, Albert Thelma, Trudy and Bill Jr. They were a family of 10 children — quite a handful, but always were enough to play games by themselves! Their cousin, Elinor, lived with them throughout her high school days, and so seemed one of the family. Violet went to a country school, then three years at Comertown High School, but transferred to Dooley for her fourth year, where she graduated. After two years in Havre, Violet received an Elementary Teachers Certificate. Her first year of teaching was a country school with 20 pupils and all eight grades.

Violet married Evald Larsen at Plentywood on Sept. 23, 1939. They worked on farms and Violet taught a total of six years. They lived in the Coalridge area until 1952, when they moved to Plentywood, where she has lived since. After moving to Plentywood, Violet worked as bookkeeper for the Farmer's Union Oil Co. for 31 years. By signing up members for the Farmers Union, she earned a trip to Washington, D.C., and also had a chance to attend the Farmers Union national convention at New York City.

She retired in 1983 and since then has been busy doing the things she didn't have time for while working! She has been involved in the Senior Citizen's Center of Plentywood and enjoyed crocheting and the latest project of quilting. In 1982, Violet went with her sister, Mary, to Norway, Sweden and Denmark. This was a memorable trip as she got to see where her mother was born and raised. Her generation was raised in the Depression years, so she learned the value of money and jobs the hard way — in those days, both were hard to come by so one had to learn to get by on what one had. There was little buying on credit.

Violet is survived by two sons, Vyrion and his companion Lori of Plentywood and Richard "Dick" of Sidney, Mont., and La Quinta, Calif. She is also survived by five grandchildren: Jill (Darrin) Cooke, Jan (James) Nolan, Jay (Brenda) Larsen, Denise (Brian) Halverson and Shawna (Steve) Casey; and by 11 great-grandchildren: Tyler and Reilly Nolan; Olivia, Logan, and Leif Larsen; Doug, Mike, and Devin Halverson, and Chandra (Jesse) Covin and Cole and Conner Casey. Three of Violet's nine siblings survive: Mary Dahl, Beatrice Jorgensen, and Trudy Jensen. Besides her father and both of her mothers, she was preceded in death by her husband, Evald, on Dec. 29, 1992; and six siblings: Solveig Fransen, and Art, Barney, Albert, Bill, and Thelma Simonson.
