Mr. John S. Buchanan, a brother well-beloved of many, both in this country and in Canada, died at his residence in this city on the 21st inst., aged sixty years. The following, from Dr. Boyd, long his pastor, and both in that relation and in others his tied and trusted friend, sends us the following:
Thus has passed away from earth to the joys of heaven a faithful servant of the Lord Jesus, the delight of whose soul was to spend and be spent in promoting the glory of God in every possible way. The writer of this notice has known him very intimately for upwards of a quarter of a century, and a more devoted Christian he has never known. The love of the Lord Jesus was with him a ruling passion. To speak of Christ's atoning death, his matchless love, his willingness to receive the most vile, was the joy of his heart. Under the preaching of these truths his soul was thrilled with joy; and with his bible in hand he would go from house to house, to explain the plan of salvation, and to entreat sinners to be reconciled to God. He abounded in the works of faith and in labors of love. To visit the sick, to relieve the wants of the poor, to bring the glad tidings of the gospel to the sad and desponding, was with him a habitual work – rather a delightful pleasure.
Brother Buchanan was one of the first members, and took the most active part in forming what is now the Michigan Avenue Baptist church, Chicago, and under the blessing of God much of its early success may be attributed to his liberality and self-denying labors. On account of the removal of his residence, he has been connected for years with the Second church, in the prosperity of which he greatly rejoiced.
Bro. Buchanan has for a long time been in failing health, but rejoices in the presence of Jesus, where the inhabitants never say, "I am sick." R.B.
The funeral services of the late Mr. Buchanan, who has for the past year been a resident of Oak Park, were conducted at his residence, on Adams street, in Chicago, by the Rev. Mr. Goodspeed and the Rev. Mr. Mabie of Oak Park. He was an old resident of Chicago, a popular and highly esteemed gentleman, and those who have known him for years regret deeply his loss. His life has been rich in Christian example.
