John was the son of John Edward and Mary "Polly " (Green) Cook of Russell county Kentucky . Mary was the daughter of Obediah Green, who died 1818 in Adair county Kentucky. John Edward Cook Jr married first Elizabeth Ellis, daughter of Peter Ellis. She died in Kentucky leaving 4 children: June (died young), Cyrus Hantsford, Mary Ann "Polly ", and James Edmond. After John married Louisiana Buster, they had Angeletta, William, Margaret, John, Shelby Stone, Susan E, Thomas and possibly Benjamin. They came to Missouri in an ox-drawn wagon train that crossed the Mississippi at Cape Girardeau. The train included John Garrett, whose wife Martha Lydia was sister of Louisiana Buster Cook.
