Near Cates Station, Fountain Co., IN, Prior Cates died on Friday, October 10, 1890. He was born in Orange County, NC, January 3, 1810. His parents moved to Virginia when he was about 3 years old, and remained there for 5 years. Then they removed to Bloodsaw County, TN, and remained there 8 years, and thence to Orange County, IN. There he united in marriage to Nancy Robbins. To them were born 10 children. Only 4 survive, 2 sons - David Cates and Joseph Cates - and 2 daughters - Mrs. Renix, of KS, and Mrs. Orahood. He was united a second time to Mrs. Margaret E. Orahood, who survives to mourn his loss. He united with the M. E. Church some 12 years ago in which he lived and died. At about 10 a.m. on Friday his spirit took its flight. On Saturday the funeral services were conducted by W. A. Smith and a large assembley of neighbors and friends testified their respects for their departed neighbor, by meeting at the residence and accompanying the corpse to Liberty Church, where funeral services were held and then taken to the Cates graveyard where the remains were deposited to rest until the trump.
