Obituary read: "David Cates, of Fulton Township Died Suddenly On Sunday. He Was An Exemplary Citizen And Well Known - David Cates, of Fulton Township, one of the well-known citizens of this county, died suddenly at his country home south of this city last Sunday. Although he had been in poor health for several years, he was able to attend to his farm work, and on the day previous to his death, he was in Covington, having brought his wife and daughter here to the train, where they went to Illinois on a short visit. On Sunday he complained of not feeling well, and his son-in-law went out to the barn to do his feeding for him. When he returned to the house, Mr. Cates had passed away.

David Cates, son of Prior and Nancy Cates, was born in Orange County, Indiana, August 20, 1845, departed this life May 11, 1913, aged 67 years, 8 months and 21 days. Of his immediate family there were ten children, all of whom have passed to the other life except two sisters, and one brother. His oldest sister, Sarah Runick, lives in Cherryvale, Kansas, the other sister, Mattie E. Orahood, live in Trumbull Nebraska. His brother, Jos. M. Cates, lives at Cates, Indiana.

When David was still a young boy, about seven years old, his parents moved to Fountain County and settled on the David Cates farm south of this city, where the deceased lived his entire life. He was married November 28, 1868 to Mary Isabell Ferguson, who survives him. Eight children were born to this union, seven of whom are living, one child, Jennie T. Cates, having died in childhood. Those living are Emma Cates Strohler of Bloomington, Illinois, Eva Cates Wells, who resides at home, Prior Cates, who lived near West Liberty Church." - Covington Friend, May 16, 1913
