He was a corporal in the company of Capt Lemuel Bent on 8 April 1762. During the American Revolutionary War, he was a sergeant in Capt Thomas Endicott's company that responded to the alarm of 19 April 1775. He was commissioned 2nd Lieutenant 23 March 1776, and served as lieutenant under Capt Robert Shaw in the Rhode Island expedition in 1777.
