Sophia & Hans owned and operated a boarding house in Northfield, Minnesota for several years. Among their boarders were teachers, professors and college-staff employees at St Olaf College. When Hans died - leaving Sophia to operate it alone.

After 1910 - Sophia became crippled and was confined to a wheelchair. She lived with Ole and Petrea Halvorson until her death.
