A Civil War veteran, James Dougherty enlisted in West Chester August 9, 1862, and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg August 12 as a private with Co. H, 130th Pennsylvania Infantry. Suffered "frosted feet' because of wearing "bad shoes" while on duty at Belle Plain, Virginia, in November 1862. Honorably discharged with his company May 21, 1863.

He married Harriet A. Bloomer February 22, 1867, in West Chester and fathered Caroline (b. 05/10/69, d. 02/10/70). According to his obituary, he had no other surviving children. He died of "fibroid phthisis."
