John Bela Cook was the son of Don Pedro Aquilla Cook and Mary Jane Turner Cook. On 17 December 1857, John Bela Cook and Martha Ann Kelley were married in Walker County, Texas. Their children were Martha Eliza, John Aquilla, William Parker, James M., Samuel G., George Perry, Charles C., Thomas E. and Harriet Elizabeth Cook. John Bela Cook was a farmer.

John Bela Cook was the 6th great grandson of Mayflower passenger Stephen Hopkins and 5th great grandson of Mayflower passenger Giles Hopkins. Stephen Hopkins was a signer of the Mayflower Compact. Stephen Hopkins was also shipwrecked with John Rolfe in Bermuda on his way to Jamestown, Virginia. In 1610, Stephen Hopkins arrived in Jamestown.
