Thomas was the son of John Ellis Shere and Marie Elizabeth Artlett. He married Amanda Flint in 1852. They were the parents of 6 children: 1 died in infancy and 1 in early manhood: They were the parents of William H, Edward E, Charles H, Frank, and Emma.

Dec 31, 1915 - Humboldt Republican - Thomas A. Shere was born at Albany, New York, on December 15, 1832. He was married to Amanda L. Flint in 1852 and subsequently moved to Tampico, Illinois, in 1859.

To this union were born six children, one whom died in infancy, and one in early manhood. Three sons and one daughter survive — W.H. Shere and E.E Shere of Welch, Oklahoma, C.H. Shere of Ware, Iowa, and Mrs. J.H. Mayer of this city where the deceased has made his home for the last few years.

Mr. Shere was one of that swiftly passing procession of veterans who served their country in the great war for the union. It was altogether fitting that he should be laid to rest by the comrades who shared with him the common perils and sacrifices involved in that great struggle by which the integrity of the nation was preserved and liberty secured for future generations.

Services were conducted at the residence of Mrs. J.H. Mayer. Rev. H.D. Herr delivering the serman, after which the local GAR Post were in charge and closed the services with their beautiful and impressive funeral ceremony.

Mr. Shere was a man of sturdy and manly character. He was possessed of strong and original individuality. He was well known and respected by all who knew him. His familiar figure on the street of Humboldt, and his cheerful greeting and joyous disposition will be greatly missed not only by his family by the citizens of our town and county in general. Interment was made in the Humboldt Union cemetery where so many of his comrads sleep around him.
