Another of Porter’s oldest inhabitants passed away in the death of Theodore Chamberlain which occurred Sunday afternoon, October 12th at 2:25 o’clock of paralysis, after an illness of nearly a year. He was born in LeRoy, New York December 22, 1825 and married Miss Nancy McCarthy Nov. 25, 1853 also of LeRoy who walked by his side for nearly 50 years. In November 1867 he with his wife two sons and one daughter came to Lawton, Michigan where he resided six months. He then purchased his present home where he lived at the time of his death. He was the father of five children, four of whom survive him and were present at the time of his death. Besides these and his wife he leaves six grandchildren and two brothers and two sisters.
He was a kind and loving father and husband, but everything that the tenderest love and care could do was of no avail and in the quiet of the peaceful Sunday afternoon, with his loved ones about, he left us. As he lay so peacefully at rest among the flowers, the words are suggestive to all: After life’s fitful fever he sleeps well.”
The funeral services were conducted by Rev. J.A. Byers at the house Tuesday afternoon at 2 o’clock, amid a profusion of flowers, sweet floral tribute from loving friends. A number of beautiful hymns were sung by Misses Bitely and Lawton, Mrs. Frank McKeyes and Messrs, Smith and Thorton. Interment took place in the family lot in West Porter Cemetery.
