John Neis, well known farmer of Fruitport Township, dropped dead in a ditch on his property which he went to clean out. His body was not found until 8 o’clock this morning although searchers were out until after midnight. Heart trouble was the cause of death. For a number of years, Mr. Neis has been troubled with his heart but had not been complaining lately of any illness. None of the family was at home when Mr. Neis left the house and no one, on returning at supper time had any idea where he was.
Drops Dead in Ditch
Leaving his house, Mr. Neis evidently took his hoe and went to a ditch or drain on his property quite a little distance from the residence, and started cleaning it out. Evidently, the exertion of the work was too much for him and he dropped over dead into the ditch. His hoe fell in along side of him and from any distance no one would realize that the drain contained the body of a man. Members of the family returned about 5:30 o’clock and searched frantically in the neighborhood for the aged farmer but could find no trace of him. Foul play was hinted at and all kind of suspicions and rumors were afloat concerning his mysterious disappearance. A searching party was quickly organized but it was then dark. With lighted lanterns the party looked through some adjacent woods searching until after midnight. Is Found This Morning Early this morning the search was taken up and after futile efforts until 8 o’clock, the body was found in the ditch where it had dropped the afternoon before. Mr. Neis was born in Luxembourg, Germany 60 years ago and came to the United States in 1883. He was married to Miss Christine Weber in 1889. He leaves one son, William and three daughters, Elizabeth and Wilhelmina Neis and Mrs. John Bour. Mr. Neis was a member of the St. Joseph’s German Catholic church.
