He retired from Conrail, having worked most of his adult life for New York Central Railroad, and then Conrail. He was very artistic, with a flare for drawing and painting.

He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII (13 Sept 1943 - 20 Mar 1946) as a sonar-man on the Destroyer, USS Irwin DD-794. He was involved in 7 Major Campaigns in the Pacific, and received the WWII Victory Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Area Medal with 5 stars, American Area Medal, Philippine Liberation Ribbon with 1 star, and The Navy & Marine Corp Medal.
