BLAIR, Neb. - Victor J. Goerke, 86, of Blair, formerly of Scottsbluff, died Saturday, Nov. 22, 2008, at the Memorial Community Hospital in Blair.

At his request cremation was held. A Memorial Mass will be held Friday, Nov. 28, at 10 a.m., at St. Agnes Catholic Church in Scottsbluff, with Father Donald Buhrman officiating. Inurnment with military rites by the United States Navy will be held Saturday, Nov. 29, at 10 a.m., at the Fairview Cemetery in Scottsbluff. A Vigil Service will be held Thursday, Nov. 27, at 7 p.m., at the Jolliffe Funeral Home in Scottsbluff. In lieu of flowers, memorials in his name may be made to the Scottsbluff 23 Club or to the St. Agnes School Foundation. His obituary may be viewed online at www.jolliffefuneralhome.com where online condolences may be made to be forwarded to the family.

Victor was born in Burr, Neb., on Oct. 24, 1922, to Sidona and Victor Goerke. He grew up and received his education there, graduating from high school with the class of 1939. He served his country in the United States Navy as a commissioned officer from 1943 until 1946 in the Pacific Theatre. Upon his return he resumed his studies at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, graduating in August 1947.

Victor married Maxine Shearon on May 29, 1948, in Nashua, Iowa. In 1953, the couple moved to Scottsbluff where Victor worked for over forty years as a certified public accountant. He was a longtime member of the American Institute of CPA's and the Nebraska Society of CPA's. Victor was devoted to his family and was an avid golfer and sports fan, especially cheering for the Huskers and the Yankees. He was involved in developing and promoting the Scottsbluff 23 Club youth baseball program. He was also active in the Rotary Club, Elks Club, and was a member of St. Agnes Church and the St. Agnes School Advisory Board. In 2005, he moved to Blair where he resided until his passing.

He is survived by six children and their spouses, Greg and Barb Goerke of Scottsbluff, Vicki and Bob Wittry of Blair, Brad and Michele Goerke of Austin, Texas, Brain and Michaela Goerke of Omaha, Sandra and Mike Delsing of Kennesaw, Ga., and Tom and Kari Goerke of Denver, Colo. He is also survived by 20 grandchildren ; and one great-grandchild, Victor (Tyson) and wife Linda Goerke, Elizabeth, Gretchen and husband Sean Henderson and John Goerke; Christopher and wife Jennifer and son Kevin Wittry, Justin, Nicholas, Jennifer and Lindsey Wittry; Cory, Molly and Connor Goerke; Megan, Grant, and Rachel Goerke; Elizabeth, Ryan and Jordan Delsing and Christian and Austin Goerke.

His wife of 53 years Maxine; his parents; two brothers; and an infant son, Victor; preceded him in death.
