SCOTTSBLUFF - Memorial funeral services for Bernard L. Goerke, 84, of Scottsbluff, who died Dec. 20, 1997, at the Regional West Medical Center in Scottsbluff,will be Saturday Jan. 17 at 10:30 a,m. at the first Christian Church in Scottsbluff with the Rev. Paul Whitfield officiating. Cremation was at Sunset Memorial Park in Scottebluff. Jolliffe Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Memorials have been established to the church or to Macular Degeneration.
He was born April 5, 1913, in Omaha to Victor and Sidona (Butz) Goerke. At an early age he moved with his family to Burr where he grew up and graduated from high school. He received his bachelor of arts degree in education from Peru State College and his masters degree from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. He married Jean Zike Dec 13,1941, in Garden City, Kan. He served his country in World War II from 1942 until 1946. In 1950,he was hired as the business manager for the Scottsbluff School District where he served faithfully in that capacity for 28 years. They had celebrated their 56th wedding anniversary on Dec. 13th of this past year.
He was a member of the church, volunteered for the 23 Club for a number of years, coached golf at the Scottsbluff High School for several years, was a member of the Jaycees,the Elks Lodge, and enjoyed golf, gardening and Nebraska football.
Survivors include his wife Jean Goerke of Scottsbluff; his sons and daughter-in-law Gary Goerke of Atlanta, Ga., Rick and Carol Goerke of Aurora, Colo.; daughter and son-in-law Marcia and Richard Garman of Huntington Beach, Calif.; brothers Delton Goerke of Medford, Ore:, and Victor Goerke of Scottsbluff and three grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents.
