Two weeks after Harriet died, Samuel married Amanda "Mandy" Jane Heddlesten. She was 45 years younger than him and they were married over 10 years before his death. She then married Samuel's grandson, Albert E. Brant. Albert and Mandy share a headstone at Montpelier Cemetery in Crawford, Madison County, Iowa.
