Beverly Briem (Turley), daughter of Marie and Max Briem, passed away on January 14, 2012. An Ogden native she is coming home to rest after residing in Oregon for the past three years.
After attending Ogden High School, Beverly won a scholarship to Weber Jr. College where she graduated as the Outstanding Girl Graduate of her class. After a year at BYU she moved to California where she married and had three children.
In 1966 she entered California State University, Los Angeles, earning a B.A. in Philosophy, an M.A. in History, and a California Community College Teaching Credential. Later she earned a second M.A. Degree (in Geography), won the 1994 Outstanding Thesis Award for her thesis entitled "The Light on the Landscape", graduated with a 4.0 GPA and served as a teaching assistant.
Beverly worked at several institutions in varying capacities culminating in sixteen years' service at the prestigious law firm of O'Melveny and Myers in Los Angeles, where she served as Administrative Assistant to the Director of Operations.
After retirement she taught several classes at California State University, Fullerton, including Philosophy and Neighborhoods of the World. As a member of the Association of University Women she served on the Board of Directors in California, and as the President of the Ogden Branch for three years. Also a member of the Chareya Club, she served as Corresponding Secretary, Vice President and President.
In 1998 she moved back to Ogden after many years of residence in Southern California. It was a great delight to her to reconnect with family members and friends and "come home". She loved the Wasatch Mountains and the memories she had of picnics in the canyon and growing up in Ogden.
As a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Beverly participated in several capacities while living in California. After moving back to Utah, she was a teacher and First Counselor in the Relief Society at the Harrison Regent Branch.
Beverly loved travel and visited most of the United States, as well as all the counties of Western Europe, Turkey, Russia, Canada, Mexico, Australia, and New Zealand.
As a devotee of the late Nelson Eddy, she joined the Nelson Eddy Appreciation Society, and one of the highlights of her life was attending the annual reunion of members each year. She also enjoyed opera and was a member of the Ogden Opera Guild.
Beverly is survived by her daughter, Sister Teresa Gould (Dianne) of Mt. Angel, Oregon, her son, Arthur Brent Gould of Susanville, California, her daughter and son-in-law Katherine (Kaytie) and Robert Watkins of South Pasadena, California, her sister, Arlene Briem Sayegh, of Whittier, California, a niece and nephew-in-law, Reema and Hal Lange of St. George, Utah, two beloved granddaughters, Claire Watkins of Fulton, Maryland and Emily Watkins of Alexandria, Virginia, and several cousins in Utah.
Beverly will be remembered as an intelligent, generous, independent woman who was intellectually curious and sought knowledge and education throughout her life.
A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, January 24, 2012 at 11:30 a.m. at Ogden City Cemetery, 1875 Monroe Blvd. in Ogden (the grave site is located near 8th Avenue and Center Street).
