Funeral services for George Gorden Bowen, one-time Itawamba representative, were held Oct. 14, 1971 from the McNeece-Morris Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was in Memorial Gardens. Mr. Bowen died in his sleep at the W. J. Daniel Memorial home in Fulton on 12, 1971. He had lived at the home since suffering a stroke two years ago which left him almost completely paralyzed. He was a son of the late George Young Bowen and Ida Ella Roberts of Itawamba County. Mr. Bowen is remembered as the first man, with his twin brother, Sale, to land an airplane in Itawamba County. The landing was made on the site of the Itawamba Junior College. The brothers, then owned the Twins Nash Agency in Columbus, charged $2.00 for rides over the Fulton countryside. He served Itawamba County in the House of Representatives from 1948 to 1952. He operated a store in Fulton for several years. In addition, he was an expert electrician and a carpenter. Mr. Bowen was a member of the First Baptist Church of Fulton. He was a veteran of World War I and was an active member of the Itawamba County American Legion Post until he became disabled. Members of the post were his pallbearers.
Survivors included his widow, Mrs. Ruby Wright Bowen of Fulton; and seven children; Mrs. Georgia Manning of Tupelo, Mrs. Patsy Bennett of Natchez, Gordon D. Bowen of Dorsey, Major Bowen of Fulton, Mrs. Janice Moore of Dorsey, Mrs. Nina Rial of Booneville, and Mrs. Dorothy Beard of Houston, Texas; ten grandchildren; two brothers, John and Ruble Bowen of Smithville; and a sister, Mrs. Ripple Smith.
