Coveda Eugene Currie, age 60, died very suddenly at midnight Wednesday as his home at San Mateo. Though he had not been in robust health for some time, he was attending to his official and business duties as usual up to Wednesday night. He was at the County Bond Trustee meeting Tuesday, when he was again honored with the chairmanship.
Funeral services will be held this Friday afternoon at the family home with Rev. H. B. Fraser, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church, officiating. The body will be carried to Evergreen Cemetery, Jacksonville, for interment in the family plot, with W. Carl Davis and Son directing.
The deceased was born and reared in Lawrence County, Georgia. In 1903 he came to Florida, settling in Putnam County and engaging in the naval stores business at Interlachen. He later moved to Palatka and for many years operated a wholesale grocery establishment here. Of late years, he had been a resident of San Mateo, where he owned valuable orange grove property. For the past two seasons he had managed the citrus packing plant at the State Market at East Palatka. Taking an interest in public affairs, he was appointed by Governor John W. Martin in 1924 as a member of the first Board of Bond Trustees, and had served as a member ever since. In the past November election, he was again honored by the voters of Putnam County, and was just entering upon his duties for another term, when suddenly stricken by death. In fraternal circles "Major" Currie, as he was known by his intimates, was also active, being a popular member of the local lodges of Masons, Knights of Pythias, and Elks. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Mamie C. Currie; one son, George Currie Jr., all of San Mateo; and three brothers, W. E. Currie of Alamo, Ga.; Elmer and W. L. Currie of Glenwood, Ga. (Palatka Times-Herald Obituary dtd Friday, 10 Jan 1941.)
