11/11/1926 - 01/13/2012
Richard Haggerty "Dick" Burkett, 85, of 2458 W. 450 N. Rochester, passed away Friday, January 13th, 2012 at his home. Dick was born in Fulton County on November 11, 1926, to Walter L. and Mildred V. Haggerty Burkett. The first born of the Burkett boys, he shared his childhood with brothers Don and Jerry.
After high school, with Paul Burns, Dick set sail with the Merchant Marines. He reported in to Chicago, then on to Sheep's Head Bay, New York where he began working out of the union hall. He helped hauling our troops to France and returned with P.O.W.s and wounded soldiers, on board the St. Albans Victory and the USS Sea Tiger. On January 24, 1946, Dick entered further service to our country with the United States Army, reporting in to Camp Pickett in Virginia. He served in the European Theatre and earned a Victory Medal and the Army of Occupation Medal Germany.
On September 22, 1944, Dick married the love of his life and best friend, Margaret Clay in Marshall County. Their union spanned 67 years and produced 2 handsome sons, David and Randy. The family tree continued to grow over the years, with the arrival of 2 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.
In the early years, Dick and Margaret began raising baby chicks which later produced eggs. Their start in poultry came from Uncle Bert Leedy. Enjoying life in Richland Township they proudly oversaw a fine herd of 50 cross bred beef cows, sheep and a few Holsteins. They also looked forward to spring when they tapped for maple syrup. Dick worked in production at Bendix of South Bend for 35 years, retiring in 1980. While working at Bendix he continued to help his Mom and Dad with their farming operation at night. Over the years he accumulated money to buy a new 7700 Ford Tractor upon his retirement.
To relax, Dick enjoyed the music of cowboy poet Baxter Black. He loved life on the farm and raising his family in the country. After retirement he looked forward to many spirited games of Pedro and hanging out with his buddies at the card table at various locales around town. He occasionally trekked out west, and enjoyed many good times in Nevada.
Dick is lovingly remembered by his wife, Margaret; 2 sons: David Burkett & wife Linda of Rochester, and Randy Burkett and wife Beth of Rochester; 2 grandchildren : Dustin Burkett & Jessie Burkett; 3 step grandchildren: Terry, Andrea, & Debra; 2 great grandchildren: Lexi & Kami; 7 step great- grandchildren: Adrian, Breanne, Ayden, Haylin, Cole, Abby, & Delany; a brother: Don Burkett & wife Jackie of Rochester; 1 niece and 4 nephews: Jeralyn Burkett Hines, Jay L. Burkett, Bill Burkett, Pat Burkett, and Mike Burkett.

Military rites will be conducted by the Leroy Shelton American Legion #36 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars # 1342, both of Rochester. Interment will be at the Richland Center Cemetery.
