In 1920, Harriet Cummings and the Brookline Historical Society authored the book entitled Burials and inscriptions in the Walnut Street Cemetery of Brookline, Massachusetts, with historical sketches of some of the persons buried there. On page 38, it says Capt. Samuel Croft Sr, is buried in this tomb.

He died Nov. 14, 1771, aged 71 yrs.
