On many records he is called Owen, the Irish version of Eugene. Eugene filed his declaration of intent in Hamilton, Butler County, Ohio in 1854. This is where his oldest children Mariah (Mary) and James were born. He bought property in Allen in 1857 and lived there until his death.

His wife Mary Burns/Byrne died in 1863. He then married Mary Jackson Kavenaugh, the widow of John Kavenaugh, in 1864.

His parents were James Kealy and Mary Dromgool.
