Mary Odessie "Dessie" Howard is the daughter of John B "Jack" Howard and his first wife Letha Viola Simmons. Letha Viola died in 1905. Shortly after her death "Jack" married Emma Alzora Karr who had remained single staying at home caring for her ailing father until marrying Jack at age 38. Emma had no children and reared "Dessie" as her own with Jack. During the 1920's Dallas County like many others counties were devastated by an influenza virus and this is what Dessie died of as told to me by Gladys Karr.--Charlotte Hamilton
