In 1912, Elmer homesteaded in Section 34, Township 8N, Range 57E in Fallon County to the southeast of Plevna, Montana. After marrying Eva, the couple proved the homestead on 12 December 1916.
Elmer died in 1922, shortly after the birth of his daughter Dorothy.

DEATH OF ELMER W. RIVER
Elmer Willis River, who came here with his family last fall, from Plevna Mont. and took up residence in Leaf River Township, died suddenly last Saturday afternoon. He had sustained what was thought to be a minor injury in the groin last Thursday when he fell on a pump handle, his death being attributed to a blood clot.
Funeral services were conducted by Rev. E. S. Ford at the home of Mrs. Irish, Mrs. River's mother, and the remains were shipped to Riceville Ia. on Monday for burial.
Mr. River was born in Cresco Ia. On Sept. 21 1888, and 10 years ago took up a homestead at Plevna, Mont. Seven years ago he was united in marriage to Miss Eva Jacobson, two Children being born to this happy union.
Dr. Abe River, a brother of the deceased and his father, came up from Riceville [Howard County], Ia. to attend the funeral and accompany the remains home.
