EBERT KLING, ASSESSOR, DIES OF HEART ATTACK

Ebert Kling, 69, Pitkin County Assessor and former rancher on Snowmass Creek, died last Friday, January 6, at his home on West Hopkins Avenue. Mr. Kling had been ill with a heart ailment for the past month and his condition had been quite serious for several weeks. However, some improvement had been noted and while he was confined to his bed, had hopes of being able to sit up soon. Last Thursday he was feeling much worse and his condition steadily worsened until his death early Friday morning. Mr. Kling was appointed Assessor January 6, 1944, to fill the unexpired term of Chas. D. Hart and was elected that fall to his first term in his own right. Mr. Kling was re-elected to a second term as Assessor for Pitkin County last election held November, 1946, and had another year of his term to serve as Assessor. In the election in November, 1946, Mr. Kling received the highest number of votes of any candidate running for county office.

He was born April 21, 1878 at Miami, Indiana, and grew to manhood in that vicinity. He married his first wife, Mabel, in 1907 and they continued to reside there until they moved to Fischer, Oklahoma, where Mr. Kling was employed by a railroad company for about four years. While in this employ, he suffered an accident that caused the loss of his left arm above the elbow. When the Klings returned to Indiana he was employed as a superintendent of a coal company near Miami where he worked several years before deciding to come to the West.

In 1925 they moved to La Salle, Utah, where he was manager of a store, later moving in the same capacity to Cisco, Utah. Later he took over the management of a ranch near La Salle belonging to Charles Redd.

After staying there for several years, he moved in 1935 to the Redd ranch located on the Wildcat branch of Snowmass Creek where his wife Mrs. Mabel Kling, died in June 1939.

He remained there until the fall of 1943 when he moved to Aspen to take the Assessors position under an appointment by the Board of County Commissioners.

Mr. Kling was a member of the local Elks Lodge and Hiram Lodge No. 98, Ancient Free and Accepted Masons. Joining Hiram Lodge about three years ago, he made a most remarkable record in advancing to the Master of the Lodge just before his death. The day before he was to have been installed in this high office he was taken ill and could not be present at the installation.

His record as Assessor probably could not be equaled anywhere. Mr. Kling was eminently fair in all of his valuations and almost without exception every taxpayer was his friend. The results of the last election proved without doubt the high esteem and regard the voters of Pitkin County held for Mr. Kling. He was also Drivers license examiner for Pitkin County, conducing his examinations at his office in the Court House.

The people of Pitkin County will certainly miss his unselfish service, the warmth of his handclasp, his friendly greeting and the heartiness of his laughter.

He was united in marriage to Mrs. Geno Bell at Price, Utah, on March 21, 1941, who survives him. Other close relatives besides his widow are: two uncles, Joe C. Weaver, Miami, Indiana; Frank Weaver, Cincinnati, Ohio; four aunts: Mrs. Harry Weaver, Fairmount, Ill.; Mrs. Jennie Stout, Bunkerhill, Ind.; Mrs. A. C. Burns, Edgewood, Maryland, and Mrs. Goldie Carver, Madison, Tenn. Pallbearers, all members of Hiram Lodge No. 98 were Jens Christiansen, D.A. Maltsberger, Wm. R. Shaw, Christy Wieben, Harry Williams, and Kenneth Watt.

Honorary Pallbearers, all members of Lodge No. 224, Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, were: Orest A. Gerbaz, George W. Smith, Clarence E. Rader, James E. More, Milton G. Conner, Frank Loushin, and Warren J. Conner.

Funeral services were conducted Thursday afternoon at the Community Church at 2 p.m. with Rev. Minar A. Gerrard officiating. Masonic and Elks services were conducted at the grave. Burial was in Red Butte Cemetery.
