My research indicates a birth record for Luther from New Haven, Connecticut that shows it looks like he changed his name because he was originally born 12 Feb 1816 to Timothy and Lydia Andrus.
A census document of 1870 shows that Lydia (then 85) was living with him and Jane and their children. The census documents of 1860 and 1870 show the name spelled Andrews.
