The son of Solomon & Nary Catharine (Bentz) Johnson, in 1860 he was a laborer living in Warrington Township, York County, Pennsylvania. He stood 5' 5" tall and had dark hair and black eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Harrisburg August 29, 1864, overstating his age by three years, mustered into federal service August 30 as a private with Co. I, 200th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company on May 30, 1865.

He married Maria E. Reed October 1, 1888, in Harrisburg and fathered Elmer S. (b. 11/21/89). In 1894, he literally was a ninety-eight-pound weakling and died in Harrisburg City Hospital from "pericarditis," leaving his wife a fifty-dollar life insurance policy that had cost him $.10 a week. His pension file includes numerous stated ages that calculate to a variety of possible birth years, but the one shown here comes from his death certificate.
